I believe this subject has been debated and argued over for centuries, dating back to when Adam and Eve were created. Just since Eve fell for the trick of the snake and ate the forbidden fruit, man has always thought and considered the woman to be less significant. Most men of the Christian faith have to understand that if it wasn't for Eve's sin the Christian faith wouldn't have turmoil and tribulation. Everything would come easy and Christians would be scrutinized even more than they are now. Also a main part of Christian and other faiths is that life represents the flesh form of existence in which man (and woman) is tested before being sent to heaven. If man truly thinks of a woman as a less significant, what test is there? Is it the test of loving someone else more than one’s self? Regardless of significance? Thus rising above the measure of one’s or others worth?
Theory has it that cavemen would select a cave woman with long hair and big hips with the understanding they had better child bearing abilities. This also goes along with todays world. Men have been known to go for the woman with long , thick hair and curves ,over skinny and short hair today. Women nowadays through statistics have been known to find a husband based off of their father figure. This doesn't mean a man that looks like her father but portrays the same qualities whether good or bad. My point is that there is a learned schema that we develop from childhood as to what is right in a man or a woman. As adults we seek to find what is familiar over something that is truly what our own personalities will mesh best with.
The way that women have been looked at use to be strictly for childbirth and re-population. Men like to hear their name will be passed down and carried out through history and always remembered. Men have always been the provider, so with this they feel the need to be more masculine and have a need to be seen as the one who creates , controls and determines every aspect of a relationship. In 1920 the 19th amendment was established giving the women the right to vote , along with allowing women into the workforce. Today, views may not be a strong as in the 1920’s, but there are still the superior/inferior mindsets or Venus and Mars backgrounds which leads to thinking that men and women are fundamentally different as if they are species from entirely different planets.
Selection now has to do with baggage , finances , personality, arranged marriages and the occasional wonderful outcome of love. It is very hard for someone to select a partner in life if peer pressure and media in the way. Parents always want the best for their children ,but always don't see what the children see’s. A man might want a woman because he sees the mother of his children , his parents see their legacy being carried on and grandchildren in the future. Peer pressure can come from friends simply not seeing what their buddy see’s in that girl. The friend in this case might ask why is my buddy choosing her over me? When this occurs the attached man might be more inclined to treat her differently due to peer pressure in order to salvage what relationship they have, when this isn't the case at all. A simple conversation is all that needs to happen to come to a conclusion. Media today doesn't help the perception of women. Things like skinny is in, modifications, augmentations, botox this and lift that. I can personally see how men can get aggravated with women and think because men can't fake much that women should not be able to either.
As the times have progressed and the world as a whole has evolved women have proven themselves that they are more than capable to do what any man can do and more. This is a very difficult thing to do in a mans world as having to prove strength , intelligence, endurance, perseverance, and all while taking care of a full household. I do personally know women do abuse the female role and try to get what they want without having to do the work, when they do this it just makes it just that much harder for the rest who are being honest hard workers.
I do believe the struggle for women has gotten a lot better . With evolution and technology many things can change over time and maybe in favor for women. I do hope whatever is to come out of the future benefits everyone. I do feel women need more help due to what we have endured and what we are capable of doing which is giving life. Giving birth is a amazing and beautiful thing that women can do in their lifetime. I do know that it takes a mans help to create such a great moment in someone's life. With being able to have the ability to give life, I would hope that mankind in general would be more appreciative to their counterparts in the future.
I agree with you, although we have made many strides socially with the way women are perceived in everyday life, there are certain things concerning the way we are looked at socially that will never be changed.
ReplyDeleteGood blog, and I do agree that as society sets in to reality men are always the more dominate person with any situation that goes on in the world. As women we tend to just fall along with what ever happens because we feel protected since we have let it happen for so long.
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that some men, not all, still feel that women should only have a limited roles as you listed. It's surprising that its taken this long for women to become equal with men and various areas like the job front or even combat units in the military. Truthfully, it's not as good as it could be. I do agree that technology has had something to do with the struggle you speak of.
