Doctors and researcher have been trying to figure out why there are more males than females with autism. For years this has continued and there is still no real reason why males have autism more than females although there have been many studies trying to figure this out.. Doctors and researchers have it figure out but I do not think so. I think that they do not because there are more and more being diagnose every day. It is a lot like having cancer, they can treat it but in some cases there is no cure for it and live with for the rest of their lives with a label attached to them that you cannot take off once you have the label you have it follows you for the rest of your life.
Can it be that genetics play a role in why males are more prone to being diagnosed with autism. Researchers are working on a gene that may hold some of the answer. In a Time Health and Family article, “A Genetic Clue to Why “Autism Affects Boys More” it states that “There is a new found gene that is typically in males , now known as the autism risk gene. This gene CACNA1G is responsible for regulating the flow of calcium into and out of cells and sits with chromosome 17.” The CACNA1G gene I believe is a great breakthrough but there is more studying and research that needs to happen regarding this gene.
In previous years, researchers did not know who would have autism. It was a disorder that is still, not easily detectable. As time and research have advanced in the area of autism, they have narrowed it down to whether male or female will be more prone to having autism. Time has told us that there are more males with autism. A study stated in a Autism Speaks article “What Is Autism” it states hows that males have a greater chance to be diagnosed with autism than to that of females; “1 out of 54 males have autism and 1 out of 252 females live with some type of autism in the United States.” It amazed me that there were so many males that live with autism and so little females have autism this was not what I was expecting when I started writing this paper. http://www.autismspeaks.org/what-autism
After reading many articles, I have found that most talk about males that have autism and do not talked about females as much. I think that there needs to be more research on females because it seems like they are forgotten. There are females that have autism and some doctors dismiss it as that is an emotional female and in some cases that may be true but in my friends case they had to fight to get the diagnoses and she was over the the age of 7. They did not know what they were looking for, they knew that there was something wrong but they had to fight to get a diagnoses of autism for their child.
Autism seem to be a big problem with boys and not girls. I hope that there is a cure for autism in the future . I also hope that many children are not diagnose with autism.
I often see more guys with autism than girls.
